If Chai tea is a fully-loaded four-door sedan, bubble tea is a 2004 red Volkswagen Beetle with all the trimmings — trendy, and as fun to look at as it is to have.

Bubble tea is a mix of tea, milk and ice. Giant black tapioca balls, the size of small marbles, sit on the bottom of the cup and complete the drink. The tapioca bubbles have a consistency somewhere between Jell-O and chewing gum. Flavours range from honey dew and coconut to taro and green tea.

It is a healthier beverage than soft drinks or coffee, and a lot more fun, too. Numerous research reports have indicated the health benefits of tea. In addition to thirst quenching, tea could boost the immune system and even fend off cancer.

Bubble Tea's appearance definitely makes it unique.  One thing is for certain, Bubble Tea is not a fad. It's a trend. This drink is addictive. If you've had a good one before then you know what we're talking about.

What is tapioca?
Tapioca is a starch extracted from the cassava plant, which is native to the Western Hemisphere, but is now more widely cultivated in Africa and Asia. It is produced in several forms: a flour, flakes, and pellets or pearls.

Pearl tapioca is responsible for the puddings of so many childhood memories and is used in bubble tea. Bubble tea tapioca usually contains sweet potato, cassava root and brown sugar, all of which add the black colour.
